Artist Statement

My mixed-media works on paper begin with a watercolour wash, then develop through layered materials, drawn lines, specks, and repeated marks. The watercolour blooms, pools, and settles unevenly; later marks respond to what has appeared. I build each piece through a sequence of small decisions, with every new detail changing the conditions for what follows. I often work in series, using repetition across pieces while allowing each one to move in its own direction. Constraints such as limited palettes and recurring gestures give shape to this responsiveness, creating a visual vocabulary with room for improvisation.

I think of these works as small ecologies, with each element developing in relation to what is already there. Their imagery draws from everyday environments where natural processes and human activity overlap. Some forms become recognizable while others remain ambiguous. Small details point to how human activity lingers in these places.

This interest in structure, responsiveness, and relationship extends across my broader practice as a multidisciplinary artist. In both music and visual art, I create conditions that allow me to respond to what arises through the creative process. That same openness extends to the viewer: familiar colours, forms, and subjects offer an immediate way in, while finer details leave room for other meanings to emerge. Across my practice, I return to how we inhabit and affect the spaces around us, and how our environments are shaped by weather, growth, use, and what we leave behind.
